Carpenter Helper

The commercial construction Carpenter Helper is expected to assist carpenters in performing miscellaneous and lesser skilled carpentry work across all levels of the construction trades at varying tenant improvement and base building construction projects in and around the Atlanta, Georgia area while always being focused on safety and quality.  Carpenter Helpers are well-rounded and have a good understanding of all trades and tools, and may independently perform minor carpentry work.  He/She is passionate about construction, has a strong work ethic and is proud, diligent, tireless, proactive and committed to producing quality results by the end of each day.  Carpenter Helpers must be available for both day, night, and overtime work, and able to perform continuous manual work both inside or outside at varying heights (to include using fall protection and harnesses) in all kinds of weather or conditions.

This position will report directly to HITT’s onsite superintendent or site operations leader and will be in daily contact with multiple subcontractors and HITT employees, and may potentially have daily or frequent contact with Clients and their employees or clients.

A Carpenter Helper’s requirements and responsibilities will be determined by the needs of the job each day and type of project being constructed, but typically involves the repetitive use of one’s hands and tools, heavy lifting of objects, bending, kneeling, walking, and standing for extended periods of time. This position is expected to operate a variety of hand and power tools and may operate heavy machinery or powered industrial equipment with proper instruction and certification.  Duties, tasks, responsibilities, and activities may change at any time with or without notice and exist outside of typical assignments.  This position has some supervisory responsibilities in managing laborer crews.


  • Assists carpenters and other trades, or performs miscellaneous and lesser skilled carpentry work in commercial construction project settings; performs manual work onsite.
  • Installs protection and signage, picks up and organizes tools and equipment and secures job site each day to eliminate potential safety hazards.
  • Understands basic rough carpenter knowledge of tools, materials, and methods
  • Understands basic doors, frames, and hardware (DFH) knowledge
  • Reads and marks measuring tape and material for cutting and shaping.
  • Reads and interprets drawings, plans, and sketches.
  • Installs and removes ceiling grid and tiles
  • Installs handrails and safety handrails with supervision
  • Applies and smooths or removes caulk and weatherproofing material
  • Applies paint to surfaces to include wood, metal, walls, sidewalks, curbs, etc.
  • Assists with installing bathroom accessories and partitions
  • Assists with layout work
  • Frames walls or aligns, straightens, plumbs, and squares structures.
  • Frames windows and doors
  • Hangs, patches, and repairs drywall
  • Finishes drywall
  • Builds concrete forms
  • Chips concrete or mixes, pours, and smooths concrete
  • Assists with masonry work
  • Installs and removes floor tile and carpet square
  • Installs and removes cove and wall base
  • Sets up and maintains office trailers and construction entrances.
  • Installs and maintains temporary fencing and gates.
  • Erects and disassembles ladders, scaffolding, barriers, etc.
  • Loads and unloads trucks, and carries material up to 75 pounds and 150 pounds with help.
  • Provides a general cleanup of job site after work has been performed.
  • Performs laborer tasks when none are available.
