Corporate Safety Director

HITT’s Corporate Safety Director is the most critical and visible position within the company.  The Director is responsible for the health and safety of our employees, subcontractors and other key stakeholders.  The Corporate Safety Director drives HITT’s safety culture by evolving and maintaining a proactive corporate safety program that has buy-in at all levels of the company. This position is a key member of HITT’s leadership team and reports to the company’s General Counsel.

Responsibilities 

  • Defines and embodies the company’s safety culture
  • Leads the Safety Department of 14 team members, including 3 Senior Safety Managers, and manages multiple consultants
  • Visible leader and subject matter expert in safety internally and externally
  • Ability to influence and generate buy-in on evolving safety policies and procedures
  • Establishes corporate strategy on safety programming; develops and manages against key performance indicators
  • Leverages industry relationships
  • Recruits, develops and retains high quality safety talent; creates opportunities for career development
  • Develops performance evaluation criteria for operations and site operations (i.e., project managers and superintendents) related to safety
  • Co-chairs the Corporate Safety Committee alongside executive-level leadership
  • Serves on the Operations Executive Committee (OEC) alongside other company leaders
  • Generates thought leadership for presentation internally and externally
  • Responsible for executing corporate initiatives and departmental goals
  • Engages regularly with business unit leaders in planning and strategy
  • Responsible for internal and external safety communications strategy and implementation
  • Proactively communicates safety-related incidents
  • Regularly and proactively presents safety-related information to the company, including company safety performance, leading indicators
  • Crisis management and communication
  • Directs and influences the company’s safety training requirements across the various operations and site operations positions
  • Develops and coordinates specialized training to business units
  • Assesses training needs for Safety Department
  • Owns, maintains and evolves the company’s corporate safety program
  • Sets safety inspection criteria and expectations; analyzes data and identifies trends in performance for HITT and its subcontractors
  • Provides support for project pursuit efforts and participates in client interviews
  • Responsible for corporate compliance with federal, state, local, corporate and client safety requirements
  • Researches/evaluates OSHA current and future regulations to address project needs
  • Leads OSHA or third-party safety inspections in person or remotely
  • Maintains positive relationships with regulatory, subcontractor, and other peer safety professionals
  • Leads crisis or accident/incident response and investigation independently
  • Leads safety planning as part of preconstruction process
  • Responds to safety concerns from client, tenants or impacted members of the public
  • Collaborates with HITT’s Risk Management/Insurance Team on overall corporate risk strategy
  • Local and national travel up to 25%

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in safety or related field
  • CHST preferred, CSP across industries or equivalent professional safety designation is highly desirable
  • First Aid/CPR certification
  • OSHA 30 for construction. OSHA 500 preferred
  • Degree and twelve years of experience or fifteen or more years of construction safety experience. Other professional experience/skills may act as a substitute.
  • Strong technical writing and verbal communications skills
  • Effective public speaker
  • Ability to assess and prioritize multiple business unit needs, tasks, projects and demands across diverse geographic areas
  • Able to handle confidential information
  • Strong analytical and research skills to define and solve problems
  • Ability to lead emergency or crisis conditions
  • Able to work under various environmental or site conditions
